Mitigating Smoke and Soot in the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shop Keeps Donations Flowing
Even small electrical fires like the one that happened in the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shop can leave smelly soot on almost every surface. SERVPRO of Belmont / San Carlos went in and cleaned up all of the soot so patrons, employees, and guests would not experience any of the odors such soot produces.
In this video, we show how we used specialized brushes to remove soot clinging to the tops and sides of support beams, heavy plastic sheeting to seal up racks of clothing for deodorization, and cleaned surfaces, including glass and floors, so they shined again, “Like it never even happened.” Hydroxyl radicals produced by our machine bonded with the odor-causing soot particles that clung to the sealed up clothing. This effectively destroyed the soot and also freshened the clothing.
We also used HEPA filters on the majority of our equipment. HEPA filters trap particles like soot, so it became easy to remove them from the shop's environment. Our vacuums and air scrubbers both use HEPA-grade filtration systems, so we know these machines strip the air of any irritating substances left over from the fire.
Our in-house cleaning agents leave surfaces glossy and streak-free, and gets everything smelling nice again. Both glass doors, windows, and shiny surfaces can become marred by abrasive soot, just like a person can experience different health effects from soot in their environment.
We appreciated this opportunity to show our dedication to the community, especially since cancer affects so many lives, including those of our own friends and family. Being able to make this shop smell fresh and clean again meant a lot to all of us at SERVPRO.
